08/29/09 - Pigeon River 3:15PM : Pigeon River whitewater (Class III/IV) with Wildwater LTD ( http://www.wildwaterrafting.com, 423-487-3307).

The upper Pigeon River is a 5 mile run from Walters Powerplant to Hartford, TN and contains multiple class III/IV rapids. Immediately below the put-in is Powerhouse Rapid (a long class III rapid), followed by BFR (Big "Friendly" Rock, yeah right). Below the 1 mile bridge is Vegematic (Its a slicer, Its a dicer, its Vegematic), so named because of potentially sharp rocks in the riverbed). Following Vegematic is Big Bend, then Snapdragon, and eventually Lost Guide.

Lost Guide contains 2 drops, an upper hole that is a known raft muncher, and a lower hole that is surfable at most levels. Of course, "accidents" do happen. After Lost Guide the river calms down a bit, until the grand finale, Double Reactionary and Accelerator, back-to-back class III+/IV- rapids.

08/22/2009: Horsepasture River : Horsepasture River Gorge offers easy access, several stunningly beautiful waterfalls and excellent swim holes. The only drawback... the crowds. If you are looking for solitude, get there early or visit on a weekday., otherwise, be prepared for lots of visitors. There are potentially so many visitors that you will wonder if you are at a Six Flags water park.

One of my favorite swimming holes is Hidden Falls. You can easily climb behind the waterfalls and be "hidden" from view. (I'm not sure that's how it got named, but it makes sense right?) Of course, there is Turtleback Falls. A local once said "Its like Sliding Rock on steroids" You slide straight into a 15 foot drop. Of course the water is warmer than Sliding Rock, but there aren't any lifeguards and the pool is not 100% hazard free.

WARNING! There are many dangerous places in this river, so use common sense. Avoid swimming at high water, and do not swim anywhere between Turtleback Falls and Rainbow Falls! Being swept over Rainbow Falls has proven fatal on several occasions.
